Greetings to the Murray Clan Society of New Zealand
I am honoured to have been asked to send a message of greeting to the Murray Clan Society of New Zealand to mark its 60th Anniversary. Congratulations.
I was proud to represent George Iain Murray, His Grace the 10th Duke of Atholl, Chief of the Name and Arms of Murray, Am Moireach Mor [The Great Murray], who gave me leave to talk to our Murray clansmen and clanswomen in New Zealand on the history of the Murray Clan at your 25th anniversary dinner in Dunedin.
I pay tribute to the most excellent men and women - absent friends - who laid the foundation for the Murray Clan Society in New Zealand, knowing that they were acting on behalf of future generations of their fellow Murrays; and to the inspirational volunteers who are still keeping alive the traditional spirit of family pride and togetherness. You have set a wonderful example to your overseas cousins.
I trust that the Society in New Zealand will today celebrate the past but also encourage the next generation to carry the legacy forward to a new era continuing the mission of promoting social links among people bearing the name Murray, or families (septs) who are closely associated with it, and to stimulate interest in the history, culture, and traditions of the Clan, helping us feel closer to our ancestors, in whom we are all interested.
I presented the Quaich at your 25th anniversary dinner and squeezed a laugh out of the room by drinking whisky from it, signifying trust and friendship. On the occasion of this 60th anniversary, let me leave you with the official motto which adorns the Murray Clan Society’s coat of arms: FORWARD WITH FORTUNE.
Past Convenor of the Murray Clan Society (1987-1990)
