Why join the Murray Clan Society?
While clan societies still exist and have a place in Scottish culture and identity, they face the challenge of declining membership as a result of historical and social changes. However, many clans are actively working to revitalise their communities and preserve their heritage for future generations. Is there a Scot anywhere in the world whose heart does not swell at the sight of kilt after tartan kilt swinging; at the sound of massed pipe bands; at the unforgettable rhythms of Scottish country dances; at the miracle of the tossing of the caber; and at the skill of the energetic youngsters at Highland Games anywhere in the world? If you want to learn more about the history and the traditions, or to meet and share cultural experiences, stories, friendships and conviviality with members of your own wider Clan, you surely cannot do better than become a member of your own Clan Society. There are dozens of these Clan Societies, all run largely by enthusiastic volunteers, and many of them, like the Murray Clan Society in the UK, are charities.
Affiliate membership
Every person who has the same surname as the Chief (MURRAY) is deemed to be a member of the clan. Equally, a person who has one of the surnames recognised as associated with the Murray Clan (Septs) [Balneaves, Dinsmore, Dunsmore, Fleming, Moray, Murrie, Murry, Neaves, Piper, Pyper, Smail, Smale, Small, Smeal, Spalding, and variations], or who is connected by marriage, ancestry, or descent with the Clan name, then they are already a member of the Murray Clan as part of their heritage. Affiliate Membership of the Murray Clan Society is available for anyone with an interest in the history, culture, and traditions of the Murray Clan and in the work of those who have borne the name Murray, or who simply wants to stay in touch.
