The Murray Clan Society

Added on 08 January 2025

Mrs. Mary Hetherington née Murray, a long-standing member and a trustee of the Murray Clan Society, passed away in December 2024 at the venerable age of 92. She was a loyal and familiar figure at all the Murray Clan Society's events. Mary first sparked her son's interest in the Murray Clan as a child by showing him her Murray of Atholl tartan scarf. He later served as Convenor of the Society between 1987-1990. Mary meant so much to so many people. She enriched their lives and she was the original life enhancer whoever she was with. She was an immensely strong character, wise and loving, with a mischievous spirit, a unique natural grace, and an infectious optimism about life itself. Somehow, she seemed unstoppable. She was a great admirer of the towering mountains of Scotland and the serenity and spiritual beauty of the Highlands. Mary also loved trees, especially oaks, and she would often say: “I think that I shall never see anything as lovely as a tree”. A gentle and humble lady, she always saw the best in people and possessed that rare gift for friendship with people from all walks of life. Mary was someone who truly cared about people and loved talking to people. She personified the well-known 'wind of the Murrays'. Her departure to whatever great final adventure is planned for her has left an irreplaceable chasm in the lives of her family and friends, but we are all the richer for the sheer joy of her presence and wonderful wisdom born of so much experience and an innate sensitivity to life. She leaves a legacy which can inspire us all - a life well lived.
